Liverpool & Manchester - A Thousand Splendid Smiles

Salam & good day.

Last weekend, i manage d to hit UK, visited two lovely places, Liverpool a.k.a 'Kolam Hati' and Manchester. Widely known as having two premier football clubs, top rated in the English Premier League, this makes these two cities being hailed as such. I'm not that big fan of these, since i still stick to Arsenal - gunners. Met my friend there, prefer to be called as "Doss", a biologist who is working for his doctoral work at the School of Tropical Medicine, University of Liverpool, - in finding ways to beat malaria parasites. Have no idea much about the rest of his work, just a bit dumb struck when he showed me those DNA sequencing. Yep, God knows why mathematics and computer sciences stuffs are my bread and butter. heh...heh...heh..

Liverpool

Two things about Liverpool ~ The Beatles and off course the home Liverpool and Everton Football clubs. Looking to the past, King John granted a Royal Charter to Liverpool in 1207, and was once the "Second City of Empire", eclipsing even London for commerce at times. The miles of docks bore witness to cargoes from around the globe and the mass migration of peoples from all over Europe to the New World. Anyway, modern Liverpool is more than that.

One of the gateways to Liverpool, - The John Lennon Airport

Local people are called as Liverpudlians or famously knows as Scousers ~ taken from the meal known as scouse - a kind of stew. Scouser is also used to explain the "weird" dialect. I would rather to say it is a language on its own. Probably it has something to do with Ireland people.

Liverpool, - when it was officially recognized as a city in 1207 by King John, he used a seal - that resemblance an eagle, which is one of the sources in the end - after a long debate, this bird is finally known as a "Liver bird" - a type of cormorant bird (due to the unskillfully made seal).

Colliding the past and present

Last year, the city celebrated its 800th anniversary, and in this year it holds the European Capital of Culture , sharing this title with Stavanger, Norway. Next - Manchester.

Manchester

The city of Manchester is a relatively new city; was born during Industrial Revolution, and it took the lead in the world's textile manufacture and production in the late 18th century. The original Manchester was an old town which has been inhabited since Roman times, when General Julius Agricola built a fort just north of the site of present day city. However, modern Manchester is well known for the Red Devil Football Club ~ Manchester United! @ MU. I reckon a visit to the Old Trafford, where the infamous MU stadium is hosted - is a must.

• The name Manchester originates from the name Mamucium, the ancient Roman name of the fort and settlement.
• Manchester United's Old Trafford ground, the largest club football ground in the United Kingdom, with a capacity of 76,000, and England's only UEFA-rated 5-star stadium, is just outside the city, in the borough of Trafford.
  
• The first city in the UK to acquire a modern light rail system when the Manchester Metrolink opened in 1992.
• Manchester also hosted the World Squash Championships in 2008, where our beloved Datuk Nicol Ann David captured the title for the 3rd time (2005, 2006, 2008).
