Geek's Talk X: A Visitor from the Future?

Salam & good day.

It was my 3rd ramadhan, and i attended this talk "The Parallel Universe" (actually i was accompanying friend of mine, a theoretical physicist) . This talk tells us about some theoretical concepts of time traveling, particle accelerator, and bla bla bla... errr wait a minute, did i say "time traveling" ?.

Yup, i am not pulling your legs. Introducing, the time traveling! Mankind has been fascinated with this story. There are many theories related to the time traveling, name it, Time Dilation, Cosmic Strings, Twin Paradox, etc etc... As for sure, there are two ways of time traveling, one is - forward time, and contrary to the first one, backward in time.

The concept of forward time traveling is pretty simple. It can be achieved by accelerating to extremely high speed of light or by getting close to an extremely big mass. Using Einstein’s theory of relativity - time is subjective. For example, you can go on a one minute high speed trip only to return to Earth to discover you have just missed a whole decade back at home. When the Russian cosmonaut Sergei Avdeyev spent 748 days in the Russian MIR space station, he missed 0.02 seconds on Earth. A small fraction of time, but it is considerably a time travelling thingy. Recall the Isra' and Mikraj journey by our prophet Rasulullah s.a.w using Al-Buraq, it is eventually a simple manifestation in a divine form of forward time traveling. Since Al-Buraq is moving faster than the speed of light, thus it makes time traveling possible (scientifically proven).

So, how about to travel backward in time ?
It is theoretically possible, but practically impossible. Consider this infamous paradox, "the grandfather paradox". The grandfather paradox is a hypothetical situation in which a time traveler goes back in time and attempts to kill his grandfather at a time before his grandfather met his grandmother. If he did so, then his father never would have been born, and neither would the time traveler himself, in which case the time traveler never would have gone back in time to kill his grandfather. It is eventually will change the whole course of universe.

I was amazed (or was smiling to see) how they are seeing these through the eyes of science. Our intuition will ask such rationality when we are dealing with such paradoxes in our thought. I believe, by any rational means, science (coupled with religion perspectives) provides great answers. As a Muslim, i believe time is one of the things that can not be mendled, easily. Allah has revealed the important of time through one of the verses in the Holy Qu'ran (Al-Asr, 1-3), and how it is related to many of us. Argument either is possible to (or not to) travel in time is currently beyond human's capability of doing so, but the most important part is - how to do best with such amount time that has been given to us.

Clearly, time is something beyond our knowledge to be revealed, as a complete knowledge on its own. At least, at this moment. So, if backward time traveling is possible, where are all the visitors from our future? ;-)

G@ @ Samy Vellu applied the concept with Pos Lagu years ago. remember his comment on Pos Lagu, "Besok hantar, Hari ini sampai"?

danial - ha ha ha ...... you're one of them, aren't you? do not tell me that, keep it to yourself. :-)

chareen - besok htr, hari ini sampai? err.... now i guess our bro sammy did invent the time traveling machine. cool eh? .... correct correct correct.... (chareen, i will vote for you for the MIC's presidency later)
