Friendship, Betrayal, and Redemption

Salam & good day to all,

Finally, I managed to finish reading the The Kite Runner novel last night. I remember the first time I laid my hands on this book. I bought it, just to kill my time - while i was waiting for my flight, back to Amsterdam. The author was an unknown name (for me) and it was his first novel (i guess so). In my thought, there was a high chance of me abandoning the book after touchdown. But, I was wrong!

The Kite Runner is the story of two boys - Amir (a Pashtun) and Hassan (a Hazara). The main character in this story is Amir, a son of a filthy rich merchant and enjoyed a high class life. Despite of this, most of his fate has deeply entertwined with Hassan - the son of his family’s servant and closest-so called friend. In a cruel twist of fate, Amir witnessed a cruel crime committed against Hassan, but he, too coward, to protect Hassan. That choice haunts him a lifetime, and shapes his life - forever.

The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hoesseini

This book comes with an array of complex characters and situations that will make you think hard about friendship, betrayal, and redemption. Truly, I was virtually sympathized with Amir, and felt angry with him at many different societal facets. Similarly, to Hassan and his father, and projection of their life (and how it ends) has swayed me a little, to think how lucky we are, at least. One of the things that continued to strike me throughout the story was, how I personally wanted to scream some sense into Amir to do the right thing :-) .... (well cannot help it!)..

By the way, words of caution, the violence in the book is sometimes painful to read, and also a bit heartbreaking. I have not watched the movie yet, but will do. In a nutshell, this book is centrally depicts love, friendship, history, ultimate betrayal and subsequent redemption. I am hoping that the movie would do justice to Hosseini’s masterpiece. If you are looking for a nice novel to dive into, this book is a must. Well, a good book to be enjoyed by anyone who has wanted a chance to make things right again
