When Love & Hate Collide

Salam & Good day

I really fancy Def Leppard band (or used to be). I guess that's why it is in my work :-) Let me make it straight, actually it has nothing to do with that Def Leppard, or that song. It is basically one of the results i had from my social support network simulation, literally :-). The main motivation of this part is to capture the interaction patterns when people seek for help (and how people provide help). Since my work is focusing to design a computer agent /robot that help depressed patients, knowing these abilities are essentially needed. It is a commonly accepted concept that most people with minor mental health problems seek help from their friends and relatives rather than from health professionals.

From my simulation results, it is quite consistent (or hypothetically) to conclude that in a long run:
  • bad people received less support from their social members :-) .... so be nice then
  • individual with a high neurotic (love to exaggerate things) received less support as well.
  • people who are seeking emotional comfort often avoiding from solving the problem, which later put them into a great risk of getting depressed, again!.
  • if people keep seeking help and expecting more (or too much) from their social members, then normally sooner or later it will erode their relationships.
  • even without stressful events, people with a neurotic personality will tend to create their own problems, and to seek for help. Quite chronic!
  • and bla ...bla ..bla ..bla... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!
overview of my work. Homer!

One of the simulation results

Since my model is based entirely on cognitive psychology findings, it has been verified as well. So, it is pretty nice to study human behaviors using a set of mathematical equations. :-) Later, this model will be programmed into our computer agents/robots, in order to allow them to analyze and make decisions based on patient's social support resources. It means, trying to minimize patient risk from experiencing future onset. Welcome to the future, where one day you will find machines rule many things. :-)

Azizi,

Humour me please.

Akak baca and since my brain has been left to exercise on only simple and mundane everyday problems like what to cook today? for far too long...are you saying that you are designing robots to take the place of human giving emo comfort to their depressed brothers?

I foresee two problems here, hehehe...bunyi macam prof serba tau pulak!

1) the depressed human being might become too emotionally attached to the robot i.e is it humanly possible to have a satisfying relationship with a robot?

2) the robot in turn becomes neurotic while the human gets cured. I mean...since the robot make-up is so interactive, it is possible no?

Hahaha...be careful and take care of your neurons!

Strangely, I find your simulation results are 90% true. Dealt with some of them so far and must admit that I can't do any cognitive process in return.so, thank u for this robot that u r working on =p

anneaziz --> a ha ha, no worries.
answering your questions,
1 - human engages with no-living entities via several ways, e.g appliances. But, it is entirely based on human perceptions. To err is human, - it is also applicable for sociable machines, as well.
2 - good news, it is almost unlikely. fail-safe mechanism will be embedded. Unless that machine has its own capability to learn, which is far-cry from what scientists have achieved now. So, do not worry, it won't happen. :-)

:-)

lynawan --> since the proposed model is based on several cognitive theories and works, the results are almost hold true under certain circumstances. But, human behaviours are far complex than a simple model could be produced. Many issues need to be solved before it is entirely ready to rock the real world :-)

I still think humans are great enough to only appreciate the real thing. The birth of artificial intelligence has really made us a bunch of confused creatures. My daughter had found love with her tamaguchi, the virtual pet and my son felt stronger after beating opponents in his PSP games. This proves artificial intelligence can really support human emotional needs. But the challenge for people like you, is to make it dynamics, sustainable and relevant with respect to time. As we speak, my daughter had lost interest in her tamaguchi and continues to beg her mother for a real cat and my son gets bored with the PSP and goes to tae kwan do classes.
Good luck to you...

jumper - as a researcher, i'm working to push the boundaries of knowledge, but still, i'm not thinking such "intelligent machines" will eventually replace all the things that we, and nature could offer, better. The definition of machines just nothing but appliances to help us to get work done. Appliances, and not more than that. :-)

azizi,

I'm interested to get one before it is patented! Hahahah!

Further comments:

1)Sociable machines do go erroneous? I hate to think it might happen to a machine which is messing with my head! But then again, we get a lot of sucked up advise from our human counterparts too, no?

2)Sci fi like AI always play up that science has reached a level that is way further than what you mentioned. If the level of interaction is limited by the machine's inability to learn from the human it is supposed to help..would the machine be of much help then?..it might get tiresome even for a neurotic mind!

Like jumper commented, enamoured by the machines which at first capture their interest and provide some element of challenge does not mean that the relationship is sustainable.
Nothing takes the place of warmth from anor human body or even a cat! In my humble opinion, a neurotic or emotionally challenged person also needs to feel needed...and machines only need servicing!

On a more serious note: The void in anyone's mind, neurotic or not, is the human need for GOD and therein lies the solution to a lot of problems with us human!

Don't worry...my thoughts are only worth 2 cents...i just like to exercise my grey matter.

~ And to Allah belong the east and the west, so wherever you turn (yourselves or your faces) there is the Face of Allah (and He is High above, over His Throne). Surely! Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures' needs, All-Knowing.

anneaziz - wow, reading your nice comment reminds me one of the participants in our workshop.
i am obliged to give the best answer.

1 - in many ways, sociable machines are gearing up to meet human expectation in social interactions. Yup, it has a long way to go, but technology has proven things will be getting better. actually it is not something to do to replace our human soul among us, but as a simple technology to complement our life.

2 - sci fi always gave a very bad definition of the real things. well, in USA, robots have been associated with negative impacts, while in japan, it almost contrarily different. it is all about perception. ;-)

Azizi,

Really? TQ...boleh lah akak join seminar...kahkahakah...!

My daughter was offered to do AI in UKM, and I was all for it...seems to me a very challenging but satisfying field since dia minat nak jadi researcher. She refused and opted for applied biology in USM...and now she tells me she's getting cross eyed trying to match DNA strings!

I guess, it's as you say, it's all a question of perception...cos she thought AI would leave her dealing in machines, while her interest is in human...but then look at what you're doing!

Good Luck in your research!

anneaziz - twisted fate sometimes bring many great things. i opted to study economics but instead stranded in the computing world. but, i guess, in many ways, your interest fueled up what you're doing at the best. now, working in a field with many different perspectives always spark great ideas to work on. :-)

r.salju - everybody does. you're not alone :-) .... me too, sometimes, or probably all the time ..heh..heh..heh
